Cathy Markel

Cathy Markel, 63, of Fargo, ND and formerly of Hoople and Hatton, ND passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 4, 2021, at her home in Evergreens Senior Living in Fargo. A celebration of life will be held Friday, July 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Hatton. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Cathy was born March 30, 1958 in Northwood, ND to Gordon and Elaine (Olson) Pladson. She grew up in Grand Forks and in 1976, she graduated from Red River High School.
Cathy raised her two cherished boys, David and Joseph, in Hoople, ND. In 1992, she received a degree in nursing from NDSCS. She spent most of her career working in Grafton at Unity Medical Center in the hospital and clinic as well as Sunset Nursing Home. In 1994, Cathy survived a very scary battle with Leukemia, which led to various health issues throughout her life. She kept fighting through them and was able to watch her boys grow into the men they are today.
Cathy finished up her 20+ year nursing career in Fargo where she could be closer to family. In 2017, her eldest son, David, started his own business and she was so proud to help and be involved any way she could.
Cathy was a diehard Denver Broncos fan. She enjoyed reading and caring for her various pets through the years as well as all animals in nature. She had such a caring and compassionate heart and loved taking care of people and helping anyway she could. Cathy always put the needs of others before her own. She always had an old soul and loved spending time with her grandparents on the farm. Cathy had that kind gentle soul that always allowed her to bond well with her elders and could play cards for hours with them. Recently in life as she got settled into new living arrangements, she loved playing bingo and got into diamond painting.
Cathy was a survivor and fought through a lot in life, but she lived with no regrets and was so happy for the blessings of so many great family members and friends.
Survivors include her sons, David Markel of Fargo, ND and Joseph Markel of Wake Forest, NC; sister, Vicky (Ron) Buchwitz, Pelican Rapids, MN; brother, Gary (Dawn) Pladson, Spicer, MN; as well as nieces and nephews: Tanya (Jeremy) Hultin, Stephanie (Dustin) Kosier, Jessica (Davis) DeSautel, Cameron and Kylie Hultin.
Preceding her in death was her father, Gordon Pladson; mother, Elaine Flaten, and nephew, Joshua Buchwitz.
