Clarice Sheppard, 97, of Northwood, ND, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton, ND. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Northwood Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northwood. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Hatton Prairie Village Chapel in Hatton.
Clarice Georgell Berg was born February 23, 1921 at Hatton, ND to George A. and Clara (Groven) Berg. She was baptized and confirmed at Goose River Church. She attended elementary school in Newburgh #3 and graduated from Hatton High School in 1938. Clarice then attended Mayville State University where she graduated in 1940.
Clarice taught elementary school for 19 years in the state of North Dakota (Hatton, Finley-Sharon, and Northwood). On June 1, 1947, Clarice married Robert Earl Sheppard in the Goose River Church by Pastor Alford Setness. Robert passed away December 27, 1990. They lived in Finley, ND for five years before moving to Northwood in 1952, where they lived and taught school until her retirement in 1998. She continued to live in Northwood until the tornado demolished her home. She then moved to Hatton where she lived in an apartment until entering Hatton Prairie Village in the fall of 2010.
Clarice and Robert enjoyed raising their one son, Robert Craig and a niece, Deborah Haugen. They had three grandchildren â David Sheppard, Tara Hall, and Wyatt Sheppard; They also had 1 step-grandson, Ralph Shamas. The two great-grandchildren were Kurt and Shyanne Hall. For several summers, they invited their grandchildren into their home for two months where they cared for and learned to know each other, as they lived so far away.
Each year, in August, they took a family vacation to various parts of the United States. After retirement, they enjoyed SCR Tours and concerts at the Chester Fritz.
Clarice was very active in community affairs both in Finley and Northwood. She as a member and officer of several organizations: American Legion Auxiliary, Literary Club, Order of Eastern Star, where she served as worthy matron with her husband as worthy patron for two years. Upon retirement, Clarice was a member of C.V.R.A (Retired Teachers Association). She was a member of Northwood Evangelical Lutheran Church, its WELCA and Circle, where she served as an officer for many years. She taught Sunday school for 20 years, was L.C.R. advisor and Luther League Advisor. Clarice was also assistant librarian for 20 years. She thoroughly enjoyed being a den mother for Cub Scouts the years her son was in it.
Clarice was an avid reader, loved music, and watching sports. Her husband, son an niece were all accomplished musicians so she enjoyed attending their performances. In HPV, she continued her reading, working crossword puzzles and loved watching UND hockey games and NDSU football games on TV.
Survivors include son, Robert Craig (Ellen) Sheppard; niece, Deborah (Dennis) Haugen; grandchildren: David Sheppard, Tara (Frank) Hall, Wyatt Sheppard; step-grandson, Ralph (Mary) Shamas; great-grandchildren, Kurt and Shyanne Hall; sister, Gloria Berg; sister-in-laws, Emilie Berg, Pat Sheppard, and Jennifer Sheppard; brother-in-law, Harry (Ruth) Sheppard. Clarice is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, George and Clara Berg; husband, Robert; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Harris Bergstrom; and brother, George Berg Jr.
