Elroy M. Amundson, 89, of Portland, ND, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at Sanford Health Center in Mayville, ND. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 6, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland, ND.
Elroy was born September 22, 1922, to Alvin Sr. and Jorgine (Kjensrud) Amundson near Portland, ND. He grew up and attended school in the Portland area. During WWII, Elroy served in the U.S. Navy. On June 14, 1943, he married Blanche Beck at Mahnomen, MN. He worked as a blacksmith in Mayville and Galesburg and as a construction mechanic at their farm in Hawley, MN. When Elroy retired, they moved back to Portland. Blanche passed away December 9, 2001. Elory enjoyed woodcarving and the Western Minnesota Steam Thrashers. He also invented a number of items during his lifetime.
Survivors include his children: Ron (Joan) Amundson, Williston, ND, Lyle (Ruth Ann) Amundson, Sherwood, OR, Gary (Karen) Amundson and Merle (Cherise) Amundson all of New Port Richey, FL, and Renae (Glen) Hanson of Hawley, MN; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren and one step great-great-grandson; brothers: Norman (Orpha) Amundson, Detroit Lakes, MN, Alvin Amundson Jr., Portland, ND and sister Delores Amb of Portland, ND.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, siblings: Olga Syverson, Alexander Amundson, Curvin Amundson, Roger Amundson, Irene Ingebretson, and Glenn Amundson.
