Margaret Hjelmstad, 99, of Hatton, ND passed away Sunday, January 05, 2014 at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 10, 2014 at 10:00am at St. John Lutheran Church in Hatton. A visitation will be held Thursday, January 9 from 5:00 to 7:00pm with a 7:00pm prayer service at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton.
Margaret Strutz was born November 6, 1914 in rural Union Township to Frank and Emma (Roeder) Strutz. She grew up in Union Township and was baptized and confirmed at Holmes Evangelical United Brethren Church. After graduating from Hatton High School, Margaret worked on the family farm. On May 22, 1937, she married Elmer Hjelmstad. He passed away in 1968. In the late 1950's, Margaret began working as a nurse's aide at the hospital in Northwood and the nursing home in Hatton. She was very active in the Stjordalen Church. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, and reading. She was a devoted Twins fan and watched all of their games. Margaret loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.
Margaret is survived by her son Larry (Marie) Hjelmstad, Hatton, ND; grandchildren: Peter (Nikki), Mason City, Iowa, Ken (Marla), Scottsdale, AZ, Clark (Heather), Maple Grove, MN, Adonica (Todd), Wahpeton, ND, Kelli (Patrick), Albuquerque, NM, Kane (Kerry), Grand Forks, ND, Kyle (Melissa), Rosemount, MN; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Elmer, son Loren Clark in infancy, son Frayne in 1998, and sisters, Dorothy Ollman and Hazel Strutz.
