Marie Uglem

Marie Uglem, 87, of Northwood, North Dakota died Friday, July 23, 2010 at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Northwood Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northwood with burial in West Union Cemetery of rural Northwood.

Visitation will be at the Bilden Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service and one hour prior to services in the church.

Marie Kathleen Ione (Haga) Uglem was born the third child of Henry and Stella (Johnson) Haga, a granddaughter of Paul C. Johnson, who named the city of Northwood in 1884 and was it's first postmaster. She attended and graduated from the Northwood Public School system, after which she attended Interstate Business College. As adventuresome young women, she and 2 other girls from Northwood found work in Los Angelos, CA, from 1943-1946 during WWII.

Marie married Berthold Ivan Uglem on June 17, 1951. She was an acitve particpant in their farming operation in Loretta township before their retirement in 1986. They moved into an apartment in Northwood in 1990 and spent 15 summers at
Big Floyd Lake, Detroit Lakes, MN. Bert passed away October 13, 2002. Marie moved into NDHC in February, 2008.

Marie was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, being a member of Northwood Evangelical and West Union Lutheran churches. She was a 4-H leader, belonged to Loretta Homemakers and served with women's church groups. She loved to sew and bake.

Bert and Marie loved to travel and went to Norway, Hawaii and Nova Scotia. In 1994, they were in Australia to visit her great niece and family.

Having no children of their own, Marie and Bert were very generous with their nieces and nephews, encouraging them in their endeavors, taking joy in their accomplishments and supporting them if there was defeat. The WELCOME sign at their home meant warmth and love, goodies and fun.

Marie is survived by her niece Marcia (Virgil) Sheggerud of Northwood and their family: Darren (Amy) and children Ivy Marie and Talia Elise of Shakopee, MN; Amy (Robert) Woods and children Camilla, Evan and Fraser of Melbourne, Australia; and Nathan (Sarah) and children Kolby James and Isabella Grace of Fargo, ND; great niece Janyne Vangsness, Fargo, ND and her dad Norman of Lisbon, ND. Also surviving are Bert's aunt Mille Skurdell of Northwood, sisters-in-law Glenna Uglem, Northwood and Florence Klabo, Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews with their children and grandchildren on her husband's side of the family.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Paul and sister Elizabeth; niece Marjorie Vangsness, and nephews David Uglem, Gary Uglem and Paul Uglem.

The Bilden Funeral Home of Northwood is assisting the family with arrangements.
